Shiney: No Yash Raj deal

Actor Shiney Ahuja seems to be an underdog. In spite of good films et al, not a lot of print space has been invested in the guy.

Shiney, however, quite likes it this way. The actor tells us, "I'm busy with my work. As long as work is happening, I'm happy."

According to sources, Shiney Ahuja had been signed up for a three-film deal with Yash Raj. But Shiney refuses that any such proposal has come his way. He says,

And as we choose to believe him and take him at face value, we move on to another 'gossipy' tale – that he refused to be a part of Hema Malini's venture.

Vaibhavi Merchant and producer Mark Brady of the famed all-Indian touring musical, The Merchants of Bollywood, are not too happy with the uncanny similarity that Shilpa Shetty’s musical, Miss Bollywood, bears to their three-year old production. According to them, Miss Bollywood which opened in Germany last week, is inspired from The Merchants of Bollywood.

Vaibhavi says, “Mohammed Morani(organizer and producer of Miss Bollywood) had seen our shows and they couldn’t believe the reactions we received. I’m sure they felt that they could do it as well.”

The story-lines: The Merchants of Bollywood traces the journey of Ayesha who rebels against her family of classical dancers to make a foray into Bollywood. Miss Bollywood revolves around this young choreographer called Maya (played by Shilpa) who is trained in the classical dances and who struggles to popularize the Bollywood brand of dancing in the UK. “The only difference is that the show organizers, Morani brothers have

cleverly roped in Shilpa Shetty. In our case, the narrative is the USP,” informs Mark, producer of The Merchants of Bollywood.

SUNIEL SHETTY opts out of Singh Is Kinng

All were shocked when VIPUL SHAH managed to get the alleged rivals SUNIEL SHETTY and AKSHAY KUMAR together for his film Singh Is Kinng. Nana Patekar, who once discussed ideas with Ram Gopal Varma to make films for the director’s banner, has now teamed up with a new producer-friend in Prakash Jha who will finance his second directorial venture. Nana said, “It is an out-and-out love story.

No car chases, no murder sequences, no fight scenes. It’s just a simple love story. It’s about a girl who encounters a loner. They meet for a while and then she goes away.

Nana plays a retired 45-year-old hero in the movie. “I play a guy who fears attachments. He believes that whoever he gets attached to dies.

“I want only Rani Mukherjee for my lead. I’m sure the minute she hears the subject, she’ll agree,” he said. During the making of Bhoot, Nana and Varma spent all their after-hours discussing ideas for films that Nana could direct for Varma’s banner but after the shooting completed, they drifted apart.

Bhool Bhulaiyya better than Laaga chunari mein daag

It’s a surprise to see that Yash Raj films couldn’t do well. Bhool Bhulaiyya has done better than Laaga chunari mein daag in the overseas. Bhool Bhulaiyya is a Psychological thriller and it’s a very interesting story about a dancer’s ghost coming back to take revenge from the person who had killed her boyfriend.


LCMD on the other hand is the story of a Woman’s journey of how she turns from a illiterate to a very posh and Educated girl, sounds interesting na - but the fact is that it has not done as well as Bhool Bhulaiyya. Checking out the actual grosses in the UK, during the first weekend, Bhool Bhulaiyaa collected $598,341 with an impressive print average of $13,296.


In comparison, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag obtained $501,714 with a good print average of $11,149. In the US, Bhool Bhulaiyaa grossed $512,000 with a print average of $9,309. Comparatively, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag grossed only $320,987 with an ordinary print average of $5,349, during the first weekend.

Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in the Himalayas on the sets of Imtiaz Ali's romantic comedy, "Jab We Met", which releases worldwide next week.

More accurately, this picture of the two is taken in freezing sub-zero temperatures at the famous Rohtang Pass, which is more than 10,000 feet above sea level. Imtiaz and his unit shot a portion of the popular "Yeh Ishq" track from the film at this location.

"Guide" which is based on a novel by R.K. Narayan was made in two versions in 1965 - the Hindi which was directed by Dev Anand's brother Vijay Anand and the Hollywood one by Tad Danielewski. American novelist Pearl S. Buck, a Nobel laureate, co-produced the English movie with Dev Anand and wrote its script.

The English version had an alternative title, "Survival".

John Abraham is upbeat about the films he has lined up, but don’t ask him about Bips

A VROOOOOOOOM caller tune greets you, assuring you that you have the right number. And then John Abraham talks enthusiastically about his forthcoming films. His next release, No Smoking , sees him playing a 12-year-old in parts of the movie. “Ranvir Shorey and I had to enact our childhood. We wore boxers, ganjis and specs and it looks convincing.

He’s also doing Karan Johar’s next with Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan; and if rumours are to be believed, his character has hints of homosexuality. “Yes, and that’s pure fun. It’s just five per cent of what the film is about. And I’ve no problems doing such roles. . “The star cast for Sriram’s film has not been finalised, but Aishwarya might act in it,” he adds.

After Water, John’s become an admirer of filmmaker Deepa Mehta and is doing two more films with her. “I’m in total awe of Deepa. I’m doing Luna and Exclusion with her. Luna is a topical film about global warming, the true story of a woman who sat on a tree for three years to prevent it from being cut down. And Exclusion is to me what Apocalypto was to Mel Gibson. Shooting for both films will start next year. Deepa’s an honest filmmaker. The equation that I share with her is very honest,” says John.

Apart from films, John espouses many causes and has started a project called John’s Brigade that builds houses for the poor; he also supports a project called Habitat for Humanity that works in the same area. He says, “ Mr and Mrs Khutija , who head a corporate body,

Talking about the comparison between the two the Ad man said, “Sonam was a fat little kid when I had met her few years back and look at the way she has groomed herself today! I can’t believe her transformation. Besides, she is the daughter of Anil Kapoor and has assisted Bhansali as a director thus making her much more experienced than Deepika in front of the camera. Also in Sonam there is a certain hunger to prove herself as other than being born in the film family nothing has come naturally to her.

Sentimental singing for Abhishek : Bappi Lahiri

Bappi Lahiri, who has found renewed success after his compositions for "Taxi No 9211" were runaway hits, says he was sentimental when he recorded a song for Abhishek Bachchan in "Guru". "Years ago I had sung for Abhishek's father Amitji.


It was a song titled 'Aana Jaana' in the film 'Geraftaar'. When I was called by A.R. Rahman to sing for Abhishek, I immediately went down memory lane, to almost 30 years ago, when I had sung for his father," said the versatile composer-singer. Recently he became the second of the three generations of Lahiris to record songs with the nightingale Lata Mangeshkar.


His father Aparesh Lahiri had recorded with Lata earlier. Now, Bappi's son Bappa too will record with the singer.

It's good to be back in his cinema," says Bappi.

Vidya Balan and Ajay Devgan in 'Halla Bol'

The shooting of Vidya balan and Ajay Devgan starrer Halla Bol has been completed.

It has music and background score by Sukhwinder Singh, lyrics by Sameer and Mehboob, and cinematography by N. Nataraja Subramaniam.

Post-production work is currently on in full swing. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi for producer Abdol Samee Siddiqui, the film also stars Pankaj Kapur and Darshan Jariwala.

Director Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Part two has been titled "Sarkar Raj", varma preferred the title Sarkar Raj than Sarkar 2 or Sarkar Again.


Three Bachchans : Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya bachchan is taking part in this film and they are in the lead. Apart from the Bachchans, "Sarkar Raj" features mostly unknown faces.


As the director want the film to look fresh he induct lot of stage and theatre actors in this movie. Director is working with Aishwarya for the first time. Ramgopal verma and Amitabh are working in three films this year, they are : Nishabd, Sarkar Raj and Sholay.

John Abrahman and Bipasha Basu don't do ads together ?

Bipasha Basu isn't enjoying the way her relationship with John Abraham is being linked to her absence in the new Clinic All Clear men's shampoo ad, the brand they endorse.

Regarding the speculation about John doing the shampoo ad with another model, Bipasha said: "When we signed the contract for the shampoo we didn't even know we'd be doing any of their ads together."

Amitbah Bachchan in Pocket maar

Bollywood seems to utilize Amitbah in all roles, the new one is a Victim role in film maker Ravi Chopra's Pocket Maar hindi movie. The film will start rolling by 2008.


After Baghban and Baabul Ravi Chopra cast Amitbah Bachchan in Pocket maar. "Decades ago I directed him in 'Zameer', I couldn't plunge into another film with him just because of the rapport we share. The project has to be worthy of his presence.

I'm now planning 'Pocket Maar' with Bachchan for early next year," Ravi . Amitabh plays a role of a pick pocket victim in this bollywood damaka.

As the theatrical trailer of Jodhaa Akbar is unveiled this week, Ashutosh Gowariker can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

“It’s been a grueling but rewarding time. I’ve been virtually sleeping on the sets. We have finally zeroed- in on January 25 as the date of release. It’s a good week because we get the full 3-day holiday weekend, Republic Day and all” says Ashutosh Gowariker.

Ashutosh still has one song to shoot which he will do as soon as Aishwarya returns from Boston from shooting her Pink Panther movie.

The epic’s postponement has given two other biggish films Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Bhool Bhulaiya to slip into the Eid Friday. “We aren’t attaching the trailer to any of the two films,” informs Ashutosh. “It goes into theatres independently.”
